I have difficulty connecting to the ttyUSB device in the guest OS. When the device is registered by Player/Workstation and available to the guest OS the device performance seems to be questionable. The device is not even recognized by Player/Workstation and doesn't show up in the device list. I should make clear that it is not that the device is not 'connected' to the running VM image. This all seems to work perfectly on a different machine running 32-bit Ubuntu 8.04 Host OS with 32-bit VMware Player or VMware Workstation running the same VM image. (That was a bit of a stretch because it appears Player/Workstation isn't even recognizing the device) I also updated the VM image to a v6.5 machine from a v5.x machine inside VM Workstation, to no avail. I upgraded the VMware Tools in the Guest OS to the latest version while running under VM Workstation, thinking updating the guest OS kernel modules might help, but it did not.

I downloaded a trial version of VMware Workstation to see if it behaved any differently. I was originally running this VM image on VM Player.

The device IS recognized by the HOST OS after being unplugged/re-plugged, but that does not propagate to VM Player/Workstation. If the device is unplugged when VMware Player has already started/resumed, or is unplugged and re-plugged after VM Player is running, it is not recognized by VMware Player (or Workstation) and is not available to the GUEST OS.

If the device is plugged into the HOST when the VM is starting or resuming, the device is registered in VMware Player (or Workstation) and is usable by the GUEST OS.

The device is a Silicon Labs (SciLabs) CP2103 usb<=>RS232 bridge device(cp2101 linux driver) commonly used in USB serial adapters.

It seems to work if the device is plugged in before Player/Workstation starts or resumes the VM image. I'm having a problem getting 64-bit VMWare Player and Workstation to recognize a USB device if it is plugged in after the VM image is already running.
